1. The Constellate Poem: beginnings and beyond with Jennifer Still Using a star chart projection as guide, participants will explore the imagistic and lexical vastness of a poem's beginning space: how seemingly disparate points can be connected into illumined lyric design.
Bring: the start of a poem that interests you; writing supplies.

A portion of the workshop will be held in the Star Factory planetarium across from the Studio.

Jennifer Still is the recipient of the 2012 Banff Centre Bliss Carman Poetry Award and the 2012 John Hirsch Award for Most Promising Manitoba Writer. Her second collection of poems, Girlwood (Brick Books, 2011), was nominated for the 2012 Aqua Books Lansdowne Prize for Poetry and an earlier manuscript won first prize in the 2008 John V. Hicks Manuscript Awards. Her first collection, Saltations (Thistledown Press, 2005), was nominated for three Saskatchewan Book Awards. Co-founder of the innovative chapbook publisher JackPine Press, Jennifer lives in Winnipeg where she works as a mentor and workshop facilitator, most recently at The University of Manitoba's Centre for Creative Writing and Oral Culture. She is a poetry editor for the literary journal CV2 and a resident of the 2013 Deep Bay Artists' Residency in Riding Mountain National Park of Canada.

2. Narrative and Songwriting Workshop with Christine Fellows and John K. Samson, Fall 2013 Writers-in-Residence
This weekly workshop offers insight into the creative process of narrative and songwriting. Participants will be able to enhance their writing skills, develop ideas, study other works, and ultimately create their own songs in a group setting. This workshop caters to amateur songwriters, and storytellers in other artistic genres. The ability to accompany themselves on an instrument (i.e. basic chording skills on piano or guitar) is recommended, but not required.  A keyboard and guitar will be available but participants are welcome to bring their own instruments.  Participants will be encouraged to create and workshop new songs, and to experiment and collaborate with fellow students. Students should be comfortable with a public presentation at the end of the program.

When: Thursdays from September 26th - November 28th, 1 - 2 pm

3. Writing the Graphic Novel with David Robertson
The graphic novel is a work of sequential art; creating it is a dynamic and intricate process, from conceptualizing the story to seeing the final words and pictures on the page. Join award-winning graphic novelist David Robertson as he explains how text and image work together to create a vivid story, including how to create a compelling script, how to make the right choices in terms of image, word, frame, transition, flow, etc; how and why images and words mingle; and how all of these elements come together.
